Trip to D.C. (Part II)

More Shots of our time in d.c.

The facade of Akwaaba, the B& B we stayed at. It has an African-American literary theme, with rooms named after famous writers: The Toni Morrison Room, The Langston Hughes Room, etc. We stayed in the Science Fiction Room (pics forthcoming) which paid homage to Octavia Butler.

From the Native American Museum. An artist used his own body in this piece, which (among other things) responds to governmental programs that scientifically assessed, prodded and attempted to categorize the Native American population.

From Mama's Organ, a bar/restaurant in the Adams Morgan section.

Looking up at the domed ceiling in the Native American Museum.

Trip to D.C. (Part I)

Two weeks ago we went to D.C. Had a grand time. Saw some wonderful things.

Poster in the American Indian Museum.

The Metro at Dupont Circle. Very steep ascent and descent. White guy in front of Anne, unknown.

A subversive in front of the capitol.

Here I am in the Dupont Circle Area. Dig those street lamps.

Eerie Details

as many marked the anniversary of the sept. 11 attack yesterday, i remained caught up in disturbing details of the tragedy that reveal it's shocking enormity.

one detail that has stuck with me:

all firefighters carry something called a PASS - personal alarm safety system. this beeping alarm can be triggered by a firefighter in trouble, OR it is automatically triggered once a fallen firefighter has been idle for a short while. this is intended, of course, to let other firefighters know where their fallen firefighters are so they can hopefully rescue them.

on sept. 11, one eyewitness rushed to ground zero shortly after one of the towers fell. upon entering the scene, he described it as fairly quiet, except for the sounds of firefighters PASS's going off in all directions - hundreds of them.

Gifts From G, Via Cheryl

a visit from a friend is a wonderful thing. a visit from a friend, carrying gifts sent from another friend is doubly wonderful. i feel the love, people. here is a pic of the gifts g sent to us via cheryl - a wonderful decor magazine, beef jerky from the great, upper midwest, a card with a friendly, upper midwest fly fisher, and a minnesota recipe book. partially devoured double dark chocolate marshmellows not included in the pic for obvious reasons.

A Brief but Highly Needed and Enjoyable Visit with a Friend

This past weekend our friend, Cheryl, graced us with her presence. Here are a few pics from her visit. The first and last pics were taken during our shopping excursion to Ithaca. The close up of Cheryl and Anne was taken at the Alexander Hamilton Inn bar in Clinton, the second one was taken over our kitchen table, and plates of Huevos Rancheros.

Radical Signs

I ran across these signs while traveling in, and from Ithaca, NY. The Native American signs were found on the Onondaga Nation reservation (on the way to Ithaca)in central NY, and the anti-capitalism sign was found in downtown Ithaca, right by the Moosewood Restaurant.

Exercise in Stupidity: Why I Loathe Some Members of My Family

Shortly after waking yesterday, I read an email from my sister that was forwarded to her by some of our right-wing, conservative relatives in Texas. Check this exercise in stupidity.

Nothing like being pissed off at 6:30 in the morning.
